Dam issue: V'Kanth goes on fast

Vijayakanth at the Theni meet today
It's now the turn of DMDK chief Vijayakanth to occupy centrestage on the vexed Mullaiperiyar dam issue.

The party workers of DMDK led by its president Vijayakanth today staged a fast at Theni urging the Centre and the State governments of Kerala and Tamilnadu to increase the Mullaiperiyar dam height to 142 ft following the Supreme Court order. The fast was organised at Madurai High Road in Theni. Huge pandals were erected and cadres started gathering early in the morning from adjoining areas including Bodi, Cumbum, Periyakulam, Uthamapalayam, Chinnamanoor and Andipatti.

Vijayakanth reached the venue at 9 am accompanied by senior leaders of the party including DMDK's presidium chairman Panruty Ramachandran. Party functionaries of Theni district unit felicitated Vijayakanth and garlanded him with shawls. Security was beefed up at Theni and police personnel were deployed in large numbers. Anti-riot vehicles were seen at the venue

Part leaders, who spoke on the occasion, urged the Tamilnadu government to increase the dam's height to 142 ft at the earliest. They condemned the lethargic attitude adopted by both the Tamilnadu and Kerala governments in the issue. An early implementation of the Supreme Court order was sought at the meeting. At Chennai, several hundred party workers gathered for fast near Valluvar Kottam. The protest was headed by State general secretary Ramu Vasanthan.

Similar protests were held at Coimbatore, Vellore and Villupuram.
